The marriage of David Dorgan and Elizabeth Ahern took place at the Roman Catholic Chapel of Ballintotis, Middleton, East County Cork:

David Dorgan is the eldest son of Patrick Dargan and Ann Flynn and he is the older brother of Patrick J. Dorgan. The Irish Census of 1901 lists David as the "Head of the Household" living at House #1 in Carrigkilter, Ballycotton, County Cork, Ireland. All persons living in his household were listed as "Roman Catholics". According to the census, his house had three rooms in which four people lived: David, a "farmer", age 48; his wife, Elizabeth, age 48; his "Farm Servant", Jeremiah Cronin, age 23; and his "General Servant Domestic", Mary Hassett, age 22. This information was given to me by Brendan Sisk of Castlemary, Cloyne, Co. Cork, Ireland in an e-mail dated October 6, 2000. Brendan researched this information using the microfilm copy of the 1901 census. I have since confirmed this information on the newly released Census of Ireland in June 2010.
David D. Dorgan, age 60, Farmer, appears on the 1911 Census of Ireland with his wife Elizabeth, age 58, together with Ellen Mahony, age 20, General Servant-Domestic, and James Flynn, Boarder, Scholar, age 13. There may be a connection between James Flynn and the family of Ann Flynn who married Patrick Dargan. All of them could speak and write Irish and English. They lived at house number 2 in Carrigkilter (Ballycotton, Cork).
David Dorgan is listed on the 1914 Guy’s Postal Directory as a resident of Cloyne. His wife, Elizabeth, is listed as Mrs. Dorgan, Vintner.
David Dorgan and Elizabeth Ahearne did not have children. However, David Dorgan took in his sister Mary's son, John Healy. His wife, Elizabeth Ahearne, took in her sister's daughter, Margaret Graham. John Healy and Margaret Grahame were married at the time they arrived at David Dorgan and Elizabeth Ahearne's farm. It was an arranged marriage. They had five children, none married.
**N.B: As an aside: Concerning the marriage of David Dorgan and Elizabeth Ahern:
The marriage between Elizabeth Ahern and David Dorgan was arranged. Their parents were farmers with adjoining properties, the Dorgan property in Carrigkilter and the Ahern property in Ballybraher.
When Elizabeth Ahern and David Dorgan did not have biological children they brought to their farm Margaret Grahame, the niece of Elizabeth Ahearne, and John Healy, the nephew of David Dorgan.
The marriage of Margaret Grahame and John Healy was also arranged. They were married before they went to live with Elizabeth Ahearne and David Dorgan.
These arranged marriages kept the properties of Carrigkilter and Ballybraher in the family until the present day. Ironically, none of the five children of Margaret Grahame and John Healy married and none had any children!
The ancestral Dorgan property at Carrigkilter has been sold twice (so far as I can tell). Sometime after David Dorgan’s death in 1917, the Carrigkilter property may have been sold to Daniel O’Connell who lived in house 3, next door to David Dorgan’s property at Carrigkilter. I need to secure the deed of this sale. Only the ancestral Ahern property at Ballybraher remains which has extensive landholdings. The O’Brien family now owns these lands.
David is buried in Mogeely Cemetery. The inscription on the headstone reads: "Erected by Elizabeth to the Memory of David her husband who died August 1917”. David was 64 when he died.
