Mcintosh, Alexander Alfred

Alexander Alfred McIntosh was born in Springville, Nova Scotia on 3 April 1850. Springville was settled about 1780 by John Fraser and others. An extremely large stream which issued from the foot of a hill there suggested the name.

Alexander appears in the 1870 US Federal Census of Rhode Island in the 1st Ward of the City of Providence, page 125. He was 21 at the time and is listed as a blacksmith. He is listed there with his three brothers: Duncan, George, and Steptoe, all born in Nova Scotia. All four brothers were living with their sister, Margaret, who had married John Connolly. John was born in Ireland. Margaret and John had a son named Albert W. Connolly who was 1 year old at the time of the census. Interestingly, Albert W. is listed as being born in Nova Scotia. If this is correct then the McIntoshes came to the USA in 1869.

Alexander A. McIntosh also appears in the Rhode Island State Census of 1875. He is listed as a blacksmith. His place of birth is given as Nova Scotia of Irish parentage.

Alexander A. McIntosh appears in the US Census of 1880 (NA Film Number T-9-1211, Page 74A). He is listed as 29 years old, born in Nova Scotia, a blacksmith, married, and whose parents were also born in Nova Scotia.

Alexander was naturalized in 1900.

Alexander A. McIntosh appears in the 1920 US Census of Rhode Island: Roll T625_1680, page 4B, Enumeration District 312, Image 1052. He lived at 22 Whitford Avenue in Providence, Rhode Island and gave his age as 68. His wife, Elizabeth Jennette Fraser, age 65 and his son, Charles Leslie McIntosh, age 37 resided at the same address. Alexander says on this census that he immigrated to the US in 1860 from Nova Scotia.

Alexander A. McIntosh appears in the 1930 US Census of Rhode Island. He was living in the 10th Ward of the city of Providence at 22 Whitford Avenue with his son Charles Leslie McIntosh. His wife died 7 months previous. The Cenus records that Alexander had a “radio set” and his house was valued at $9000.

Alexander A. McIntosh is listed through the 1933 (Providence) City Directory.

Alexander A. McIntosh was buried in the North Burial Ground Cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island on 26 Dec 1934. He was 84 years, 8 months, 22 days old and he died in Seekonk, Massachusetts.

There is a stone (monument) to mark the burial placce. His son, Charles McIntosh was buried there in 1935. They are buried in lot #5329, section 29 and there appears to be only the two of them buried there. The wife of Alexander A. McIntosh, Elizabeth Jennette Fraser, is not buried with them. This is not strange because they may not have had enough monney to buy more than two spaces.
