Stephen and his wife Anna O’Brien lived for many years at 147 Regent Avenue in Providence. They later moved to 54 Bergen Street also in the Mount Pleasant section of Providence, Rhode Island.
Stephen worked with his father, Stephen and his brother, Harold at the Brown and Sharpe Company in Providence, Rhode Island.
He was very involved with Democratic party politics in the 5th Ward of Providence.
He suffered all his life with asthma and had a "game" leg, which was caused when he stepped on a rusty nail while playing a prank of unhooking the electric wire from a trolley car. He was also allergic to wheat products. But he managed to have a "short" glass of Burgundy wine once in a while. He bribed his grandsons with "two bits" (25 cents) if they promised not to tell their grandmother.
Stephen J. Gorman was known affectionately by his grandchildren as “Poppy”.
Stephen J. Gorman’s obituary appeared in the Providence Journal on 27 November 1962:
Stephen Gorman
Stephen Gorman, 62 of 54 Bergen St., an employee of the hardening department at the Brown and Sharp Mfg. Company for the last 23 years and active in the democratic circles in the Fifth Ward, died yesterday at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, North Providence. He had been ill six weeks.
The husband of Anna (O'Brien) Gorman, he was born in Lancashire England May 2, 1900, a son of Annie (Pomfret) Gorman and the late Stephen Gorman. He had resided in Mount Pleasant for the last 58 years.
Mr. Gorman had been treasurer of the Fifth Ward Democratic Committee for the last 32 years. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, International Federation of Machinists, the Hod Carriers and the Curb Setters Locals, and had been Vice President of the Beach Meadows Campers Association of Matunuck, and a Lieutenant in the Beach Meadows Fire Department.
Besides his mother he leaves a daughter, Mrs. William J. Dorgan of Providence; a son Stephen Gorman Jr. of Warwick; two sisters, Mrs. Francis E. Place of Providence and Mrs. Nicandro Ricci of Centerdale, and six grandchildren.
The Funeral will be held Thursday at 8:45 a.m. from the J.F. Skeffington Chapel, 925 Chalkstone Ave., with a solemn high requiem Mass in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Academy Avenue, at 9:45. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.
