According to the wedding announcemnet of his eldest son Patrick, published in the Irish Examiner on Saturday, 14 February 1948: Front Page, James Motherway and his wife Mary E. lived on Chapel Street., Cloyne.

John Motherway wrote: My Greatgrandfather had land in Ballymacoda but for some reason my Grandfather ended up in Maytown near Churchtown South. There was a number of boys in family and one got the farm the others went to sea and one ( John) went to NY and they never met again.

James Motherway was in RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary). The Brits introduced Black and Tans and Auxiliaries to break the people.
